i think, therefore i blog.

i wasn't expecting a post so soon. i mean, the original plan was to only blog when interesting things happen. and to post nice pictures here. (i promise i will take photos and post them up soon. eventually. someday!!!) but i couldn't help it. too damned bored. i have just spent my ENTIRE SATURDAY doing. . . . absolutely. nothing. beyond waking up at 2pm as per normal of course. (yesterday was merely an anomaly because i HAD to do my SLS take-home exam)

yesterday. i spent 4 hours typing total and absolute nonsense. (okay, actually only about 3 hrs, cos by the time i hit the last qn, you know, the one i didn't study for, i realised i wasn't in the mood to do any more work so i wrote like 600 words and threw it aside) therefore, my simple brain needed some time to relax, and so i spent the whole of today (and possibly half of next week as well) slowly recharging. until it got boring. i read 3 books though! first time in a long while. and no. not law books. FANTASY. DRAGONLANCE. LEGENDS. if any of that makes sense to you. probably not.

anyways. interesting to note how fantasy fiction parallels real life sometimes. i mean. yes of course. it's like the easiest way to criticise the world at large without really writing about it. satire, i think it's called. (hey, do i look like a bloody lit student here? L-A-W can, not L-I-T) but i'm not going to belay the issue. nor demean my beloved fantasy books by quoting how they relate to, say, SLS for example. (though i could if i wanted to) instead, i'll post a link someone sent me today.

it's about...geps. yarh. what a horrible, awful, disgusting word. eeyer. ok, for those too bored to read the article, i'll sum it up with a one-liner. geps are ostracized for being geps. uhm. surprise, surprise. you mean, it took 21 years after the program was implemented to reach this conclusion? although, arguably, i'd have to disagree. firstly, that said findings were presented at the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect's Sixth Asian Regional Conference sometime last year. i mean...WTF? child abuse and neglect? uhm. ok. secondly, while i agree with some points in the article, like not joining out of choice, better facilities and expected performance and all, i don't think "ridiculed and ostracized" really comes into the picture. after all, if you are selected for your so-called "high intellectual ability", then you're an idiot to let yourself be ridiculed. but that's just my take on it. inapinch. so you're free to comment.

but this is rather sad. i mean. geps are seen to be elitist. law students are seen to be elitist. well. hrm. uhm.

on another note. i'm so not cut out to be a law student. for one thing, i'm not studying now. and i still haven't started on my torts revision. (although i have started reading my contracts. hello, i'm lazy, not stupid! it's a closed book paper after all) and in this period of mugging and hitting the books, it seems the only books i'm hitting are fantasy. and my main worry and grouch is that i can't seem to find anybody to go watch harry potter with. or eat supper. or just go out and chill in general. there's a distinct lack of PWTGOs (people wanting to go out) lately. sigh.

right. this post is too lengthy. i'll end off with 2 flash animations. one lame, the other llama. now you know what i've been up to in my spare time. hurhur.

the strange things you see along orchard road...

i haven't been to orchard in a while. which is a good thing, because, after a while, you tend to notice how things have changed. like how stores that used to be there aren't around anymore. and how the christmas decorations look somewhat like chinese new year decorations. and how they have a row of photos currently on display along the road outside borders (which looks very lovely and depicts such beautiful, breathtaking scenery) but which states "original print! do not touch!" and yet, it's out in the open with nary a shelter in sight. i wonder what happens when it rains?

but the most remarkable thing of all, i must say, is that while queueing up for a taxi outside far east, i happened to glance at the construction works currently ongoing (not a hard thing to do since i was waiting for like 15 minutes), and guess what i saw? stuff like "happening", "exciting", "interesting", and all those related words depicting how cool and funky the place will be after renovation. and amongst all that, i saw a phrase that completely stumped me. "high fidelity".

uhm.

okay, i might be wrong, but isn't fidelity like...being faithful to something? so...high fidelity is like highly faithful to something? which really doesn't exactly go with the other words there right? ok, but instead of blindly criticising, i accepted the fact that my english just plain sucks. and went to check the dictionary. and guess what? "high fidelity" is a noun! gosh. the things you learn everyday. so here it is, the definition of "high fidelity":

high fidelity: the reproduction of an effect (as sound or an image) that is very faithful to the original.

but then again, all things considered...it still doesn't make sense to me. i mean, not in relation to the other words there. but hey, i'm sure the designers and contractors and architects all checked the dictionary and the definitions before deciding on the words to put up. what'd i know. i'm just a lousy law student.

P.S. In a rare interview, Miss Kelly Neo from NUS Law School, had this to say to justify the phrase being there: "Many secondary school and JC kids come to this place, which means that there is a high chance of young couples hanging around here, along with the very real possbility of good looking guys and girls loitering in the area, thus giving rise to eyes and hearts wandering. So, in order to reassure the customers and to attract people to come, the phrase is there to affirm that as long as you shop here, your boyfriend/girlfriend will stay faithful to you and not stray from your side. Hence the term, HIGH FIDELITY." So there you have it, an analytical discourse of the situation from one of Law School's finest.
(i do hope i didn't misquote. too badly, that is.)
